Matthew W. Noonan to Lutheran Church of the Holy Comforter, Belmont, North Carolina
Matthew W. Noonan is appointed music director and organist for Lutheran Church of the Holy Comforter (ELCA), Belmont, North Carolina. He will plan and play music for all services on the church’s 1992 Goulding & Wood Opus 22, direct the adult choir, children’s choir, and handbell choir, as well as direct other ensembles as needed. Noonan assumes the post following the retirement of Greg Cline who served a 44-year tenure. The church is positioned to host a recital series and special events with its proximity to Charlotte and nearby colleges and universities. For the past four years, Noonan has been organist at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (NALC), Gastonia, North Carolina, and principal organist at Messiah Lutheran Church (LCMS), Charlotte, North Carolina.
Noonan began studying the organ at Eastman School of Music as a teenager, continuing at Houghton University, Syracuse University, and the State University of New York at Fredonia. He is a past winner of the Arthur Poister competition, and he has earned first prizes in several local and regional American Guild of Organists competitions. Past recital appearances have included St. Jakob, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany; the American Church, Paris, France; and the Royal Chapel near London, England. In early 2026 Noonan earned first prize in the Bach International Music Competition, a virtual music competition. Concurrent with this new position, Matthew begins his fifth year as music teacher at The Math and Science Academy Charlotte elementary school, Charlotte, North Carolina, where he manages and teaches a primary education music program for students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade.
