Nicholas Halbert to Episcopal Cathedral Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Nicholas Halbert is appointed canon precentor, organist, and music director for the Episcopal Cathedral Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he oversees the cathedral’s choirs, concert programming, and supervises music in diverse liturgical genres. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York; Master of Music and PhD degrees from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas; and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, where his research focused on the music of Dresden composer Hans Fährmann.
Halbert grew up in San Diego, California, and was a head chorister in the boys’ choir of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, where he was appointed organ scholar at sixteen. He has served in churches across the country, including the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration and Christ the King Catholic Church in Dallas, Christ Church of the Ascension Episcopal in Phoenix, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, Buffalo, New York. He has performed at conventions of the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society and appeared twice on Pipedreams. As a collaborative organist, he has performed with the All-Star Orchestra of the Mainly Mozart Festival and with the ASU University Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and University Choir. Halbert has worked as a recording engineer and producer for several projects at SMU and ASU and for organist Christopher Anderson’s recent release on the Centaur label. His scholarly work has been published in The Diapason (see “Forgotten Symphonies: Hans Fährmann and the Late German Romantic Organ Sonata,” November 2024 issue, pages 14–18). Halbert’s teachers include Kimberly Marshall, Stefan Engels, Scott Dettra, Nathan Laube, Edoardo Bellotti, Robert Plimpton, and Martin Green.
