Zipoli, Victoria, Scarlatti & Vivaldi at St. Ignatius Loyola in New York on February 7

January 22, 2007
Sacred Music in a Sacred Space

On Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at 8:00 PM, Kent Tritle conducts the Choir and Orchestra of St. Ignatius Loyola in a program of exquisite Renaissance and Baroque choral music of Spanish and Italian influence. Domenico Zipoli's unpublished Beatus Vir was discovered in an abandoned church in Paraguay in 1984. This fascinating work was composed for the indigenous peoples of the Jesuit Reductions, a phenomenon known to modern audiences through portrayal in the movie "The Mission." Tomás Luis de Victoria's Salve Regina for double choir dates from his time in Rome at the Jesuit Collegio Germanico. Domenico Scarlatti's extraordinary setting of the Stabat Mater sequence forms the center of this concert, and Antonio Vivaldi's vibrant Beatus Vir, in its rarely performed late version, features splendid solo movements written for the famed teenage soloists of the Venetian Ospedale della Pietà.

At 7:00 PM Matteo Imbruno, Organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, presents a pre-concert organ recital of works by Frescobaldi, Bruna, Heredia and Arauxo.
