Fred Hohman plays Bach

Organist Frederick Hohman continues his J. S. Bach organ recordings with Volume 5, featuring the newly-installed 2-manual and pedal Opus 83 instrument [2023] by the American builder Taylor & Boody. [The organ is featured on the cover of the January 2023 issue of The Diapason: https://www.thediapason.com/content/cover-feature-taylor-boody-opus-83.)  It is located in the Gallery of the sanctuary in Ancilla Domini Chapel, an integral portion of the mother house of Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ at its Donaldson, Indiana campus, located about 30 miles to the south of South Bend, Indiana.

The aim of Hohman’s J. S. Bach organ works series is to feature instruments of mechanical-action design from both domestic and foreign builders, installed in venues restricted to the continental United States.  Each volume in the series features an all-J. S. Bach program drawn upon a variety of musical genres and periods.  Volume 5 contains 3 Preludes and Fugues, 3 Chorale-Preludes, a Fantasia and Fugue, a stand-alone Prelude and a Canzona.

A video about the making of Bach Volume 5 includes commentary from Andrew Jennings, director of Liturgy and Music at Poor Handmaids, where he speaks about the search for the builder, and commentary from organist Hohman, as he picks up on his all-Bach recording series after a pause of more than 25 years.  Volume 5 was recorded on April 29 and released on the Pro Organo label on June 25, 2024.  The release was celebrated with a public recital played by Hohman in the Ancilla Domini Chapel on October 27, 2024.

The album may be ordered in CD format by entering 7105 in the Search Box at ProOrgano.com.
