A. David Moore dead at 80
A. David Moore, 80, North Pomfret, Vermont, organbuilder and organ restorer, died May 29. Raised on a farm in Pomfret, he had a fascination with wood and mechanical objects from an early age. He learned making music, particularly on the piano. Together with his school friend John Atwood, Moore rebuilt a pipe organ in the early 1960s. Moore eventually sold the organ to a Lutheran church in Iowa City, Iowa. He received formal organbuilding training at C. B. Fisk, Inc., Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1969, as well as with organbuilders in Europe, after which he established his own firm in North Pomfret in 1972. Moore was a subject of Steve Riskind’s three-part photographic essay, “Creating a pipe organ: Artisans at work” in The Diapason. Among the instruments Moore built, rebuilt, or restored are those found at Grace Episcopal Church, Washington, DC; St. Paul Catholic Church, Pensacola, Florida; Old North Church, Boston, Massachusetts; and North Universalist Chapel Society, Woodstock, Vermont. At the time of his death, Moore was working to finish organs for two New England churches.
