Known as “O Sanctissima”, a Marian hymn, the melody is claimed by some to be a Sicilian Mariners song, a prayer for safe passage; in other lands it is sung as "O du fröhliche", a German Christmas carol with lyrics celebrating the birth of Jesus. It is truly a hymn for all seasons.
