  • Christoph Bull

Christoph Bull likes organ music, rock music and rocking organ music. He hails from Mannheim, Germany, and has been University Organist and organ professor at UCLA since 2002. He’s also Principal Organist at First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica and concertizes internationally.

Bull studied at Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium Mannheim, Hochschule für Kirchenmusik Heidelberg, Musikhochschule Freiburg, Berklee College of Music Boston, University of Southern California, and American Conservatory of Music. He holds degrees in Organ Performance, Sacred Music, and Songwriting (B.M., M.M., DMA). His teachers include Cherry Rhodes, Paul Jordan, Samuel Swartz, Charlie Banacos, Hermann Schaeffer, Ludwig Doerr, and Ingrid Kling.

Christoph improvised his first tunes on the piano at age five and started playing church services, organ concerts and rock shows at age twelve. He’s been at home in the worlds of classical and rock ever since practicing the organ in the choir loft and with his first rock band in the basement of the same church.

In L.A., he has performed at Royce Hall and Cathedral Of Our Lady Of The Angels, but also at the Whisky A Go Go, the Viper Room, and the Roxy.

With violin player Lili Haydn he opened up for Cindy Lauper, with Sitar player Nishat Khan he performed in India. He has played the pipe organs at the Catholic Cathedrals of Moscow, Salzburg, Saint-Denis, and Los Angeles.

In 2004, Dr. Bull was a featured recitalist and workshop presenter at the National Convention of the American Guild Of Organists. The same year, he gave his first of eleven public performances to date on the one-of-a-kind pipe organ at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown L.A.

He also accompanies silent movies on the pipe organ. Collaborators include live painter Norton Wisdom, electronic musician Steve Nalepa and videographer Benton C. Bainbridge. In 2006 and 2007, he received an ASCAPlus Award for innovative concert programming. His eclectic multi-media organ series organica was designed to bring the organ to a wider audience, featuring both traditional and new organ music, celebrating its anniversary with organica X in 2009.

He has worked with the L.A. Master Chorale and Grammy-Award-winning Southwest Chamber Music, and also with Bootsy Collins and George Clinton of Parliament Funkadelic. He has produced numerous classical, rock and educational albums. His musical “Treasure Island” had its German premiere this year in Münster and Sylt.

Outside of music, Christoph ran the L.A. Marathon for the fourth time this year. While in high school, he won the German youth championship in baseball with this team, BC Tornados Mannheim. Other accomplishments include reading the whole Bible, watching all Star Wars movies in a row in chronological order of the story line, and listening to all songs released by Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr.

Christoph’s latest endeavour is the premiere recording of the pipe organ at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. To find out more about this project, please go to www.christophbull.com or planetillogica.com/xoph.
